Police in Washington, D.C. are asking for the public’s help in locating four suspects who allegedly pulled up to a crowd Monday night and opened fire, killing a 10-year-old girl and injuring four adults.
Per The Washington Post, a black SUV pulled up to the courtyard of Clay Terrace Apartments, where 15 to 20 people had gathered to enjoy the weather. The men are said to have indiscriminately fired into the crowd, wounding Makiyah Wilson as she walked to a nearby ice cream truck.
Wilson is believed to have been shot in the chest. Witnesses claimed the girl’s mother held her as she died, repeatedly saying, “Please don’t let my baby die.” The Post reported that the 10-year-old died a short time later at a hospital.
In addition to Wilson, police found a man and woman both wounded at the scene. Two more men sought treatment for gunshot wounds, according to WRC.
“They don’t even know what they did to me, her father, her family. This little girl was loved,” the slain girl’s mother, Donnetta Wilson, told WUSA, calling the gunmen “cowards.”
“I never expected to go through nothing like this. It’s my baby. That’s my baby.”
A motive for the shooting remains unknown. Police have since released footage showing the vehicle involved in Monday’s shooting. Surveillance cameras captured a black Infiniti four-door sedan with damage near the rear bumper. The department is also offering $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
“A 10-year-old girl lost her life here today. All the hopes and dreams that her family had for her is gone,” Assistant Police Chief Chanel Dickerson said in an appeal to the public. “And we have to be outraged. And we have to work with the police.”
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding the fatal July 16 shooting at Clay Terrace Apartments is urged to call police at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
