Authorities in Utah released surveillance footage from a pawn shop in Bountiful that they say shows the moment an attempted robbery ends with the store owner opening fire and killing the suspect.
According to KSTU, the incident occurred in May and the news outlet received a copy of the video from the Bountiful Police Department on Friday.
Local authorities also commented on the incident that resulted in the death of 40-year-old Kleydys Arbolaez-Hernandez.
“You see the very dynamic nature of a violent encounter with an armed robbery,” said Lt. Dave Edwards.
Arbolaez-Hernandez and another individual rushed into the pawn shop in an apparent attempt to rob the business at gunpoint.
Upon retreating to a storage closet, the owner was reportedly able to retrieve a concealed handgun.
“There’s an exchange of gunfire there and ultimately, the suspect continues after the shots have been fired,” Edwards said, indicating that Arbolaez-Hernandez died at the scene.
Alexyanis Cutino Jiminez, 30, was identified as the other suspect. He was able to flee the scene but was later arrested in Texas on a federal indictment for 11 robberies across the country.
“We can see in other videos detectives obtained in Oklahoma the same weapon was used, the same clothing,” said Edwards. “That was one of the things that tied the case up for us.”
There is no indication the pawn shop owner will face any charges. Police say it is clear from the evidence that he was acting in self defense.
