A baby was found dead in the restroom of an AirAsia India flight bound for New Delhi, India, on Wednesday, according to police and the airline.
The mother of the newborn is believed to be underage, according to NDTV, who reports that the girl, of Imphal, is suspected of giving birth aboard the plane. She is being held for questioning by authorities.
AirAsia India said the newborn’s lifeless body was found by staff as they were preparing to land, adding that the baby’s mouth was filled with toilet paper upon discovery.
The flight originated from the eastern city of Guwahati, officials said.
AirAsia said they were cooperating with the investigation via a statement, though further details surrounding the case have not yet been revealed.
“The matter has been reported to DGCA (India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and the airline’s staff are attending to other guests and cooperating with Delhi Police. We will be assisting in the investigation and cooperating with all concerned agencies.”
