Authorities in Tennessee have arrested a 26-year-old mother on suspicion of leaving her young child inside a hot vehicle as she drank at a nearby Mexican restaurant.
According to Fox News, Rachel Vanwagner is expected to face charges of child abuse and neglect in connection with the incident on Tuesday evening.
Reports indicate passersby at the Cazadores Mexican Grill in Arlington noticed a baby in the backseat of the vehicle after hearing cries and contacted authorities.
When deputies from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office arrived at around 7 p.m., they found the car turned off and the child still inside.
The vehicle’s doors were reportedly unlocked and its windows were rolled down a bit.
The temperature at the time was about 95 degrees, and likely hotter inside the vehicle, according to officials.
Authorities removed the child and began a medical assessment when the barefoot suspect ran from the nearby restaurant.
She reportedly told investigators that she went in to “have one drink” on National Tequila Day and had been inside the restaurant for about a half hour.
Vanwagner was arrested at the scene, according to police reports.
Her child was placed in the custody of relatives, though the Tennessee Department of Child Services was notified of the incident and arrest.
