A jury found 35-year-old Prabhu Ramamoorthy guilty of federal sexual assault charged in connection with an incident aboard a Spirit Airlines flight earlier this year.
According to Fox News, the Rochester Hills, Michigan, man was a traveling on the jet in January when he attacked a fellow passenger while she was sleeping.
A native of India, Ramamoorthy is in the United States on a work visa.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of aggravated sexual abuse of the 22-year-old female victim.
A jury heard that he unbuttoned her shirt and slipped his hand inside of her pants during the flight as she slept with her head against the window.
She reportedly woke up when Ramamoorthy inserted his fingers in her genitals and moved them “vigorously.”
At that point, he quit and the passenger reported the assault to airline staff.
According to U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.
A sentencing hearing is set for December. Even if he is released, the conviction ensures he will immediately be deported.
