The man accused of opening fire at a video game tournament on Sunday, killing two people before turning the gun on himself, had a troubled home life and regularly clashed with his mother over his apparent obsession with video games.
David Katz’s parents Elizabeth Katz and Richard Katz reportedly split when he was 13 years old. In divorce filings obtained from 2017 by the Associated Press, both of David’s parents reported regular conflicts in the home and numerous calls to police over relatively minor issues.
David, 24, reportedly fought with his mother regularly over access to the television and gaming devices.
“When I took his gaming equipment controllers away so he couldn’t play at 3 or 4 in the morning, I’d get up and find that he was just walking around the house in circles,” Elizabeth Kats wrote in court filings.
The teenager reportedly showed deep resentment for his mother after the divorce, and the two continued to fight over video game equipment. On one occasion, David reportedly punched a hole through the door to his mother’s bedroom after she confiscated the video game controls.
Mother and son frequently called the police on each other, according to the documents. On one occasion David called police to report that she had taken away his video games; on another occasion Elizabeth Katz called police to report that her son was “abusing” her by coming home late from a visitation from his father and assaulted her during a struggle over the television cable cord.
The mother also reportedly kicked David out of the house twice when he was still a minor.
According to the court filings, David’s mother claimed her son refuse to go to school or bathe because of his obsession with video games.
“His hair would very often go unwashed for days,” Elizabeth reportedly wrote.
David Katz had reportedly asked a judge to live with his father, claiming that his mother was “crazy” and “drunk.”
The boy was also placed in a psychiatric facility twice, but his father reportedly accused Elizabeth Katz of making claims about his son’s mental health due to her own difficulties in parenting him.
[David’s mother had] an obsession with using mental health professionals and in particular psychiatric drugs to perform the work that parents should naturally do,” Richard Katz reportedly wrote in court documents.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, David Katz opened fire at the Madden tournament on Sunday after he had lost a video game match. Authorities are still investigating the deadly shooting to confirm a motive and determine if or how Katz planned the massacre.
