A Georgia solicitor who frequently tried drug-related cases is on administrative leave after she was arrested over the weekend for marijuana possession, officials said.
According to WXIA, Deidre Merriman, solicitor for the City of Atlanta, was arrested in Dooly County on August 25. Police said a deputy pulled Merriman over after spotting her speeding on GA 401 at around 9:30 a.m. on the day in question. In doing so, the deputy reportedly smelled marijuana coming from her car.
The Atlanta Journal-Consitution reported that a search of the vehicle’s glove box produced two joints located inside a cigarette box. Prior to the search, Merriman allegedly told police that there wasn’t any marijuana in the car.
Officials with the City of Atlanta confirmed to WXIA that Merriman is on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Charged with drug possession and speeding, her bond was set at $1,256.
