Infant boy drowns in bathtub as dad plays video games in other room: Police

A 5-month-old Alabama boy reportedly drowned in a bathtub Saturday as his father played video games in another room and forgot about him.

Jefferson County police announced that Cordarius Cotton, 23, was charged with reckless manslaughter for leaving his son, Dezmend Cotton, alone in a tub for more than an hour. Medics who arrived at the apartment tried to revive the infant while en route to the hospital but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

The father reportedly told detectives that he turned the water on, placed his son in the tub, and left to play video games. Police said claimed he forgot his son was in the tub and returned to find him unresponsive.

AL.com reported that the infant’s mother wasn’t home at the time. Two other children reportedly live in the home but only one of them were present when the incident occurred. The two surviving children are with their grandmother pending an investigation, according to the outlet.

The Alabama father remains jailed on $15,000 bond.

“We all have not only a moral obligation but also a legal obligation to give proper care to a child whose life and well-being depends on a caregivers attention and actions,” Chief Deputy Randy Christian said.

“This was a heart-wrenching case for all involved including our personnel. God Bless this family and this little boy.”
