A Toronto father charged with aggravated assault in the death of his own three-week-old infant daughter is expected to face an upgraded charge of second-degree murder.
According to Global News, authorities said first responders who were initially called to the scene, located at an apartment complex on Pharmacy Avenue, alerted officials after finding the baby with grave injuries Thursday morning.
“When we arrived on scene we noticed the paramedics were working on an infant, three weeks old, who had obvious signs of trauma,” Const. David Hopkinson said Monday, according to the media outlet. “The baby’s condition was very bad, so the baby was rushed to hospital via an emergency run.”
The baby girl was subsequently placed on life support, but succumbed to her injuries on Sunday night.
Police initially arrested 29-year-old Matthew Bouffard on a charge of aggravated assault in connection with the death, however, Hopkinson told The Star that the “charge is now likely to be upgraded to second-degree murder.
Sources reportedly told Global News that the baby’s mother is the person who called for emergency services. An autopsy on the infant is scheduled to be performed today.
