A New York teen wanted for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl reportedly lept off his mother’s apartment building Monday afternoon in an apparent suicide, law enforcement sources said.
The New York Post reported that Zedin Agusto, 16, took his own life before police could arrest him for an October 14 assault which transpired in the bathroom of a Bronx park. Cops said the victim was playing basketball at Hilton White Park at 11 a.m. when the suspect approached her, took her to the public restroom, and raped her.
The teen reportedly fled the scene on foot. The girl reported the incident upon returning home and was hospitalized for her injuries, according to the newspaper.
The victim’s description of her attacker allowed police to produce a sketch—which a law enforcement source told the Post resembles Agusto. An NYPD spokeswoman said the victim claimed she has seen the suspect in the Bronx neighborhood but didn’t know him well, according to WPIX.
Police are reportedly investigating Agusto’s death as a suicide. A source told WNBC that Augsto’s body was found on an awning shortly after he posted the message “Bye” to his Snapchat account. Witnesses told News12 that the 16-year-old jumped out of a window, falling to his death.
Friends went on to tell the outlet that Agusto was playing basketball at Hilton White Park on the day of the assault. Loved ones described him as a “good kid” who went to Bible study. A vigil for the teen was reportedly scheduled for Tuesday.
