A middle school teacher in Texas took his own life in a classroom while school was in session.
ABC News reports that Jordan Halane was found unconscious in his classroom at Wessendorff Middle School and later pronounced dead.
Lamar Consolidated Independent School District officials believe Halane, who was a fine arts teacher, intended to harm himself and take his own life. Authorities have not released the cause of death, but the report notes that a firearm was not involved.
It does not appear that any students were in the classroom at the time. A school staff member reportedly found Halane alone in the room.
Principal Sonya Sanzo announced the news of Halane’s death in an email sent to parents of students.
“Our focus is always on the safety and well-being of our students. We felt that you should be aware of the situation in case your child comes home with questions or concerns,” Sanzo reportedly wrote.
The New York Post reportedly located a Facebook page belonging to Halane, which said he had been married in 2016. It is not known whether the teacher left a suicide note.
