British police say they are investigating the discovery of sharp blades found affixed to a children’s slide recently.
According to the BBC, razor blades and scalpels were found taped to the playground equipment on Winifred Lane in Aughton.
Aughton Park Councillor Doreen Stephenson reacted to the incident, calling it a “disgrace” and expressing relief that no one was injured.
“It’s quite frightening to think what the consequences could be,” she said.
Lancashire Police released a statement confirming the troubling discovery and encouraging locals to “be vigilant” in the aftermath.
“Whoever did this could have caused serious injury to a child — please be assured we are fully investigating this matter,” police said.
As the probe continues, law enforcement encourages adults to make sure they “check any play equipment” before allowing children to use it.
Officials say they will forward security footage from nearby cameras to authorities conducting an investigation.
“I can’t believe anybody would stoop so low to do something like this in a public children’s ply area,” Stephenson said.
Councillor David Westley said he was “absolutely horrified” by the potentially injurious act.
“It’s impossible to comprehend why anyone would do such a thing,” he said.
In a Facebook post, Ormskirk and Burscough Police sought tips and reports of other potentially dangerous acts of tampering.
“Please report anything suspicious or any similar incidents,” police said, offering police or CrimeStoppers contact information for such reports.
“If anyone has any [information] about this we’d urge them to contact us as soon as possible,” the post concluded.
