Authorities in New York say they are on the hunt for a suspect accused of carjacking a driver and stealing a vehicle with three young children inside.
According to the New York Post, the incident occurred on December 7 and was recorded by a nearby surveillance camera.
The SUV was reportedly parked in the parking lot of a business in Canarsie while the children’s mother was inside and their father was outside smoking a cigarette around 4:45 p.m.
Footage was released on Friday and authorities are asking anyone with information about the man’s whereabouts to contact investigators.
The 2005 Acura MDX was reportedly recovered later that evening near the intersection of Farragut Road and East 78th Street. All three children, ranging in age from 1 to 8 years old — were found apparently unharmed inside, but they were transported by police to Kings County Hospital for a medical evaluation.
Before the trip to the hospital, police transported the parents to that location for a reunion.
“The mom was holding the toddler,” one witness said at the time. “They got into the ambulance. The highway patrol cop was holding the car seat with the baby inside.”
In addition to the images and video released by police, reports describe the suspect as a black male between his late teens and early 20s. He was seen in the surveillance footage wearing a grey hoodie and a black jacket.
