Authorities in Florida say three family members are dead after an enlisted U.S. Coast Guard service member opened fire on his family this week.
According to the Miami Herald, 44-year-old John Presnar — a petty officer who served aboard the Barque Eagle — shot his wife, 7-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter before fatally shooting himself.
Only his daughter survived. Police say she was transported to an area hospital via air ambulance and was listed in critical condition.
Neither child was initially identified.
Police identified the alleged shooter’s wife as 39-year-old Gretchen Presnar. Her mother was also reportedly inside the home when the violence broke out.
“When the subject started shooting, his wife told her mother to run out of the house and call for help,” a police statement revealed.
The shooting took place early Sunday morning amid an escalating domestic dispute between the husband and wife.
“Once uniformed officers arrived, they entered the home and discovered the wife and their 7-year-old son deceased from apparent gunfire,” police added. “The subject was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
A Coast Guard spokesperson said Presnar has served in the branch since 2001.
“The Coast Guard is deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family members of those who were killed,” Ryan Kelley said. “We continue to pray for and offer the full support of the Coast Guard to the young child fighting for her life.”
