Authorities in Arizona say a man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering an infant and severely abusing two other young kids identified as the 4-month-old victim’s siblings.
According to the Arizona Daily Star, emergency personnel responded to reports of an unresponsive child at an apartment home on East Grant Road on December 16.
Upon arrival, Tucson firefighters found Ivan Escobedo and transported him to Tucson Medical Center where he later died from injuries police believe were inflicted by 19-year-old Nicholes Liggens.
Hospital personnel were able to restore the baby’s vital signs but he never regained the ability to breathe on his own, as reported by KGUN.
Medical examinations revealed Ivan died of head injuries that investigators say were deliberately inflicted by Liggens, the victim’s boyfriend who was allegedly left to care for the boy.
The suspect was arrested and booked into Pima County Jail, according to a police statement. He is expected to face charges of first-degree murder in addition to multiple counts of child abuse.
Ivan’s 3-year-old sister was also in the care of Liggens at the time and sustained injuries police said were not believed to be life-threatening and which resulted in a secondary charge against the suspect. Reports indicate another sibling was also determined to have been abused in the home.
The investigation remains ongoing and authorities are asking for tips from anyone with relevant information.
