Authorities in the United Kingdom say two suspects are behind bars after a Christmas Eve attack outside of a church in Stockport.
According to the U.K. Mirror, the alleged victim was described only as a woman in her 30s.
She was reportedly outside the St. Mary’s Church, the city’s oldest, at around 8 a.m. on Monday when two men attacked her.
The woman was then transported to an area hospital, according to a Greater Manchester Police report. Authorities involved in the investigation say she is under the care of officers trained to handle such sensitive cases.
Investigators were further able to identify two suspects, ages 44 and 57, and both were arrested later the same day. They are expected to face charges related to rape.
“We have launched a full investigation and have specially trained officers supporting the victim as she receives treatment in hospital,” said Detective Inspector Julia Bowden.
She added that police “believe this is an isolated incident,” but stressed that the investigation remains ongoing, as reported by the New York Post.
“I would encourage anyone who thinks they might have even the smallest piece of information that could assist our investigation to please get in touch as soon as possible,” Bowden said.
Police reported finding a range of refuse and debris outside the church, including a sleeping bag and assorted clothing, though early reports did not indicate how, if at all, they might have been related to the alleged crime.
