A customer has been arrested in connection with a viral video that apparently shows him attacking a Florida McDonald’s employee amid an argument over straws.
According to WFLA, the incident occurred at 6:50 p.m. New Year’s Eve at a St. Petersburg McDonald’s. Another customer reportedly filmed Daniel Taylor, 41, reaching over a counter and grabbing Yasmine James by her shirt, prompting her to trade blows with him as other employees intervene.
Taylor tells an apparent manager, “Sir, I want her a** fired!”
“No, you’re going to jail!” James yells before another employee instructs him to leave.
The customer who filmed the now-viral altercation told The Washington Post that the fight started over a straw. Brenda Biandudi explained that Taylor was angry that the location didn’t have plastic straws readily available—in accordance with an ordinance passed by St. Petersburg City Council to phase out the straws by 2020, requiring customers to request straws beginning this year.
“She [James] told him that it’s the law now that they’re not supposed to have the straws in the lobby,” Biandudi told the outlet in a phone interview. “He said there’s no such law.”
Speaking with Spectrum Bay News 9, Biandudi said James told her she used to box.
WFTV reported that police were called after Taylor refused to leave. He was ultimately charged with two counts of simple battery and is being held on $1,000 bond.
