Authorities in Maryland say a man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his mother outside of a church in Rockville last week.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, 21-year-old Kevin Justin McGuigan is accused of stabbing 49-year-old Jaclyn McGuigan on Friday at St. Raphael Catholic Church.
Police responded to the scene on Dunster Road after reports from witnesses who said they heard a woman’s screams nearby.
The suspect allegedly stood over his mother’s body before stealing her vehicle and driving away from the scene. Officers located the Honda Accord about four miles away and reportedly found items belonging to Kevin McGuigan inside.
He and his mother reportedly left her home in the same vehicle and traveled to the church at about 5:30 p.m. The stabbing took place about 30 minutes later, police say.
According to WJLA, the victim is a mother of three who survived a bout with cancer.
Witnesses initially approached in an attempt to render aid. When emergency personnel arrived, they were unable to revive her and pronounced her dead. She reportedly suffered stab wounds to her neck.
Upon launching an initial investigation, officers traveled to the victim’s home and found her two other children, a 24-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man.
“Jacob immediately asked if Kevin killed their mother,” a police report claims. “Jacob continued that Kevin has tried to kill him by strangulation approximately two years ago.”
While the teen did not report that incident to police, similar behavior appears to have been mentioned in a 2016 court document filed by his mother seeking a protective order against Kevin McGuigan.
In addition to claiming Kevin engaged in violence against his younger brother, she wrote that he had threatened to kill her.
“Kevin has threatened physical harm to me on many occasions,” McGuigan said. “He has a drug problem and is currently being evaluated for mental health. He has often accused me of knowing things about him and if I don’t answer, he will kill me. He has a drug induced paranoia.”
The suspect appeared in court on Monday for a bond hearing, during which a judge ordered that he undergo a mental health check prior to another court appearance set for Monday.
