Authorities in Florida are looking for a suspect seen on surveillance footage entering a hotel in Davie and grabbing a clerk in an apparent botched robbery attempt.
According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, the incident occurred early on the morning of December 22 at the Woodspring Suites.
Police Sgt. Mark Leone issued a statement alleging that the suspect attempted to force the employee to open a safe, but she did not have the code.
He then instructed her to open the cash register, investigators believe.
Authorities describe the suspect as a 20-something male who was wearing a dark hooded jacket, dark pants, black gloves and purple shoes during the attack. He had his face obscured by a bandanna.
The victim can be seen struggling with the man, apparently attempting to escape his grasp.
At one point during the altercation, a man later identified as Mike White arrived at the front desk. Police believe he was able to startle the attacker, who soon ran away from the scene.
“We heard screaming and as we were opening the door to go throw the garbage out and there I turned and the man actually had his hand on her,” White said.
He is now being heralded for his action, which allowed the clerk to escape serious injury and prevented the suspect from making off with any valuables.
Davie police are hoping the public will be able to provide information leading to the suspect’s identification and arrest. Anyone with tips related to the case can contact authorities at 954-693-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.
