A Florida woman who smothered her 9-year-old cousin to death by sitting on her in October 2017 was recently sentenced to life in prison.
As reported by the Pensacola News Journal, Veronica Green Posey, 66, was sentenced to life in prison after she was convicted Friday for the first-degree felony murder of Dericka Lindsay. Posey—who weighs 320 pounds—had sat on the child for more than five minutes to calm her down after misbehaving.
A medical examiner testified that Lindsay, who died from a lack of oxygen, had severe bruising on her buttocks, saying the girl suffered “injury, on top of injury, on top of injury.”
Lindsay’s adoptive parents, James and Grace Smith, were initially charged with child neglect for failing to report the abuse. Jurors heard how the couple and Posey regularly subjected the girl to horrific beatings, according to the Journal.
James was ultimately sentenced to 10 years for his role in Lindsay’s death. Grace was found mentally unfit to stand trial and will be prosecuted if and when she’s found competent to face criminal charges.
