Parkland shooting survivor who lost best friend in school massacre takes her own life

The teen girl reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound

A former student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School who survived the 2018 shooting massacre has committed suicide, NBC News reports.

According to the outlet, Syndey Aiello, 19, was found dead on March 17.  Heather A. Gálvez of the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office reportedly confirmed that Aiello was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The 2018 graduate was reportedly close friends with Meadow Pollack, one of the 17 people who were killed in the Parkland school shooting on February 14, 2018. Nikolas Crus, also a former student at the high school, was arrested the same day of the massacre and is awaiting trial on numerous counts of murder and attempted murder.

Sydney’s mother Cara Aiello told CBS News that her daughter, who was enrolled in college, had been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that she was fearful of being inside a classroom. The grieving mother also said her daughter had been feeling down lately and appeared to suffer from survivor’s guilt.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help support Sydney Aiello’s family.
