Authorities in Florida say a 28-year-old teacher was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a student who attended the Jacksonville school where he worked.
According to the New York Post, Aaron Zuniga was taken into custody on Friday and is expected to face criminal charges including unlawful sexual activity with a minor and offenses against a student by an authority figure.
He remained behind bars with bond set at $200,000 as of the latest updates available and is set to appear in court again next month.
Trinity Christian Academy confirmed it had terminated the suspect’s employment after administrators became aware of the allegations.
While the alleged victim did not initially confirm the relationship, a warrant indicated that Zuniga admitted he had an “emotional relationship” with her and later acknowledged a physical aspect.
He allegedly invited her to his house under the guise of hiring her to babysit his young child. Police say the student later affirmed that she and the teacher had sex on a couch in the living room while the 10-month-old took a nap.
Former colleague James Baltz described Zuniga as a teacher with “a good reputation from everywhere at this school,” expressing hope that news of his arrest will “be an awakening for the school.”
In a statement to news media, Trinity Christian Academy confirmed staff was “deeply saddened by this situation” and would be “offering care and support for the student and all families impacted.”
