A teacher and mother of three has been missing in New York since last weekend, and her friends appear to believe the sudden disappearance is suspicious.
The New York Post reports that Jeanine Cammarata, 37, was last seen on Saturday, and was reported missing on Tuesday, after she did not report to work this week to her job as a public school teacher at P.S. 29 in Castleton Corners, which is in Staten Island.
According to the report, friends say it is highly unusual for Cammarata to be out of contact with her job and her family.
“She’s never once NOT called into school. She’d never risk her job at the [Department of Education] in NYC,” one friend reportedly wrote on Facebook on Monday. “She didn’t call her mother for her bday, which was yesterday.”
ABC 7 reports that Cammarata also missed a court date for a custody hearing this week.
Cammarata’s boyfriend called to report her missing; though there are conflicting reports about whether he called on Saturday or on Tuesday. She is believed to have been with him on Saturday, before she disappeared. According to ABC 7, Cammarata told a co-worker at her second job at a Dollar Tree that she was going to pick up her three children from her estranged husband on Saturday, but it is unclear if she ever arrived there.
“She let me know Friday she was going to go pick up her children Saturday,” Elizabeth Torres told ABC 7.
Another friend, Jessica Pobega, told the news station that she received strange text messages from Cammarata’s phone when she contacted her out of concern, reportedly telling Cammarata that she planned on calling the police.
“I don’t want that,” the text message response, believed to have been sent on Sunday, reportedly read. “I have the kids…I apologize. I have to do this for the children.”
“But she didn’t see the children this weekend so I don’t know who that was and what they were covering for,” Pobega said.
“Something happened. Something bad happened. And I don’t know what it is and I really hope I’m wrong.”
Police have reportedly questioned the boyfriend, who also works at the Dollar Tree, and another co-worker there.
This is a developing story, and the reported information is preliminary.
Cammarata is described as being 4’11” tall, weighing 120 pounds, with a medium build. She has brown eyes and blonde hair.
Anyone with information about Cammarata’s whereabouts is urged to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
