A man is behind bars after he allegedly threw her young boy from a third floor balcony at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, and police are trying to figure out why it happened.
CBS Minnesota reports that a witness said they overheard the woman screaming that someone threw her child over the edge of the balcony on Friday morning, near the L.L. Bean store.
“She was screaming ‘Everyone pray, everyone pray. Oh my God, my baby, someone threw him over the edge,’” witness Brian Johnson told the outlet.
According to Bloomington Police, a 24-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident. The victim was identified as a 5-year-old boy, who’s suffering from “significant injuries.” The unnamed suspect tried to flee afterward, but authorities quickly caught him, according to La Crosse Tribune.
Authorities found the boy lying on the floor, surrounded by a significant amount of blood.
Police reportedly said the suspect is likely not related to the boy. They’re still trying to determine the motive.
“At this time, we do not believe that there is a relationship between the child or the family of the child,” Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts said, according to CNN. “The child did suffer significant injuries. The child has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care.”
The boy was transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis. His family is with him.
