Upset she couldn’t get into a homeless shelter for the night, a New York mother is behind bars after she allegedly slashed her two young children with razor blades.
ABC 7 reports that 24-year-old Shanice Martin slashed her 6-year-old boy and 2-year-old girl across the throat on Saturday night, allegedly slashing the boy so severely that doctors said he was cut from “ear to ear.” The suspect’s family member told the outlet she’d been staying in various shelters and an hour before the incident occurred, she called her mother and said she couldn’t get into a shelter for the night.
Passerbys spotted the children after the suspect allegedly left them both in the street, in the Bronx off of Washington Avenue and Brook Avenue, according to PIX 11. Witnesses flagged down police, who rushed the children to a local hospital.
Meanwhile, Martin, covered in blood, walked into a police precinct with a razor in her hand and told police to arrest her, according to authorities. She reportedly admitted she slashed her children.
“That’s not something that you do to your kids. I don’t care what’s going on with you, you can ask for help. She just took it upon herself to do what she wanted to do and it’s not good,” the suspect’s brother, Travis Lango, told ABC 7.
Both children remain in the hospital but are expected to survive.
Martin has been charged with child abandonment, endangering the welfare of a child, assault, and criminal weapon possession. She’s reportedly undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
