A woman in Virginia Beach is in jail after she allegedly left two children on a hot beach while she got drunk at a Memorial Day weekend beach party.
WAVY reports that Shelby Ross Oliver is facing multiple charges after she was arrested on Sunday at a “Floatopia” event on the beach. After police responded to reports of a fight, Oliver allegedly approached an officer and said her child had been kidnapped.
But police soon discovered that Oliver’s two children, a 7-year-old girl and an 11-month-old baby, had been left on the beach for hours, as temperatures reportedly soared into the 90s. According to documents obtained by WKTR, the infant was “extremely overheated with sand in eyes, eyes rolling in head,” and both children were unsupervised.
According to multiple reports, Oliver initially denied that the overheated baby was hers. WVEC reported that Oliver was so intoxicated that she could not recall her last name.
The 7-year-old girl was reportedly taken to a squad car where she was given water to rehydrate. The condition of the 11-month-old child is unclear.
Oliver was arrested on charges of child abuse and public intoxication, and reportedly remains in custody without bail.
