Authorities in Texas say a man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally stabbing his adult son following a consistently acrimonious relationship.
According to the New York Post, 68-year-old Sherman Shirley Fricks is accused of shooting his son, 27-year-old Sherman Palmer Fricks, multiple times with a .380 caliber handgun during an altercation at the suspect’s home over the weekend.
Police say the elder Fricks was armed when his son arrived for lunch on Sunday morning, as reported by KTRK.
As prosecutors revealed in a statement about the case, the father told police that he had planned to shoot his son in the back.
After making a “smart remark” and turning toward his father, investigators believe the victim was shot “until nothing else came out of the handgun.”
Despite the serious injuries, the son was reportedly still alive and responsive about 20 minutes later, when he grabbed his father. Sherman Shirley Fricks was now armed with a kitchen knife, prosecutors claim.
The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times, killing him after what the father reportedly described as a “father-son” conversation with the dying man.
During an initial court appearance on Monday, Sherman Shirley Fricks was visibly emotional, according to reports. He is expected to face criminal charges including murder in the first degree and was locked up with bail set at $60,000.
Jail records indicate he has subsequently been released on bond.
