Authorities in Connecticut say a woman remained in critical condition and could still face criminal charges after allegedly finding a foolish place to hide from the law.
According to Fox News, 41-year-old Angela Dotolo is accused of stealing merchandise from a grocery store in New London on Wednesday.
In an effort to escape capture, police believe she entered a trash compactor in the rear of the NSA Supermarket, as reported by The Day.
A short time later, an employee reportedly placed a cardboard box in the device and turned it on, shutting it off after hearing muffled screams. Staff members soon realized the woman they’d been hoping to bust for shoplifting had been inside.
She had been accused of stealing various small items, including beer, from the store.
In a statement to local reporters, New London Police Capt. Brian Wright said Dotolo was transported from the scene to an area hospital. A paramedic and firefighter were on the scene a short time after she was found and took over for employees in extricating her from the machine.
The office of the state’s attorney will be reviewing the case and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration office is also involved, Wright said.
As of the latest reports available, investigators had not determined whether they would seek criminal charges against Dotolo.
