The trial of a Florida man charged with dismembering his own father’s dead body has been found guilty and sentenced to 15 years behind bars.
According to Fox News, 50-year-old James “Jimmy” Scandirito was convicted on Friday for abusing a dead body. He was not, however, convicted of murdering 74-year-old James “Skip” Scandirito.
The case dates back to March 2018 and a kayaking trip the suspect claimed his father had taken. Investigators later trailed the son to an area near a Boca Raton golf club, where they uncovered his father’s remains.
While police initially suspected Jimmy Scandirito of killing Skip, he reportedly told police that he cut up the remains in an attempt to dispose of them after finding his dad dead near a pile of cocaine.
Prosecutors attempted to portray him as motivated by a desire to collect an inheritance.
Assistant State Attorney John Parnofiello said called it “an act that cries out for the maximum sentence” of 15 years.
During trial, Scandirito described his actions as “one bad decision, and another bad decision, and a stupid decision, and a horrible decision.”
His defense attorneys recommended drug treatment instead of jail.
In addition to the maximum prison term, a judge fined him $10,000 and could assess further costs associated with the criminal investigation.
