Authorities in Barbados are searching for a New Jersey couple who reportedly vanished Monday after renting a jet ski.
Royal Barbados Police Force said in a statement that Oscar Suarez, 32, and Magdalena Devil, 25, were reported missing at Holetown Beach after an operator became concerned 30 minutes after they went to sea, and advised other operators to be on the lookout. The couple was reportedly wearing life vests at the time of their disappearance.
“The Police Marine Unit and the Barbados Coast Guard conducted a search of the area extending as far as the Bridgetown Port but were unable to locate either the couple or the jet ski,” police said.
Officials have reportedly searched Discovery Bay Hotel in St. James, where the couple was staying, and confirmed they hadn’t returned. The jet ski they rented hasn’t been returned or located.
Suarez’s mother, Ninfa Urrutia, told ABC News that she has contacted authorities in Barbados but has received little information. Relatives said Suarez has two young children from a previous marriage and has been dating Devil for about a year.
“I’ve been calling; I call and call the police, the U.S. Embassy in Barbados, they can’t provide me with any answers,” Suarez’s mother, Ninfa Urrutia, told ABC News. “They haven’t called me back to let me know what I need to do or find out what’s going on with my son. They’re just not calling back.”
The hotel told the news station that Suarez and Devil arrived on June 22 and were scheduled to check out on Saturday.
Anyone with information regarding Oscar Suarez’s or Magdalena Devil’s whereabouts should call Barbados police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIPS (8477).
