A former NFL running back and his girlfriend were indicted in a Nevada court on murder and child abuse charges in connection with April 9 death of the woman’s 5-year-old daughter, officials announced Tuesday.
Cierre Wood, 28, and Amy Taylor, 26, are facing criminal charges for the death of La’Rayah Davis, who the Associated Press reported was found unresponsive at Wood’s apartment. In addition to bruises all over her body—including on her heart and diaphragm—a judge reviewed evidence showing Davis had 20 newly broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and internal bleeding.
Court documents obtained by the news outlet stated that Taylor admitted to sitting on Davis a week before her death while Wood said she hit her head on a carpeted floor while doing sit-ups on April 9. Taylor reportedly claimed she was at the grocery store when her daughter became unresponsive.
While Taylor allegedly spanked Davis, Wood’s accused of using exercise as a form of punishment. Wood reportedly told detectives that he preferred to make Davis exercise because she was “on the right path due to her being ‘chunky, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Wood played regular-season games with the Texans and Bills from 2013-15. He was also on Patriots, Ravens, and Seahawks before playing two seasons in the Canadian Football League.
