Authorities in California say a boy is recovering from serious injuries in the hospital while one of his neighbors is facing criminal charges.
According to Fox News, 27-year-old Walter Revolorio is accused of handing Aaron Carreto a lit firecracker at the 10-year-old boy’s birthday party.
Even as medical personnel worked to repair as much of the extensive damage as possible — including the loss of most of his left hand — at a hospital in Orange, the preteen spoke to a local news outlet about the experience.
“They lit a firework and then they gave it to me,” Carreto said. “The fuse went down, I looked at it and then it popped in my hand when I was going to throw it.”
Revolorio was arrested following the incident on July 6 and was charged days later with multiple felony criminal counties, including child abuse under conditions likely to cause bodily injury or death and possessing a destructive device in public.
As for the Carreto, his sister said he “feels betrayed by those people around us and wants to start a new life far away from where he grew up.”
