Sources in New York say Jeffrey Epstein was found on the floor of his jail cell with injuries not expected to be life threatening.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, the disgraced billionaire was denied bail after being booked into jail on sex trafficking allegations.
According to WNBC, multiple sources close to the case say the well-connected 66-year-old financier was found semiconscious inside his Metropolitan Correctional Center cell with apparent marks on his neck.
While two sources indicated that the incident might have resulted from a suicide attempt by hanging. Another individual, however, described the injuries as superficial, suggesting Epstein might have staged the ordeal in an effort to receive a jail transfer.
Yet a fourth source with information related to the investigation said Epstein might have been assaulted and that another inmate — former police officer Nicholas Tartaglione — has been questioned in connection with Epstein’s injuries.
Tartaglione was reportedly arrested in 2016 on charges related to killing four individuals in a drug deal gone bad. An attorney for the inmate said he did not harm Epstein, adding that the two have gotten along behind bars.
“They are in the same unit and doing well,” Bruce Barket said.
Epstein has reportedly been placed on suicide watch as a result. More than a decade ago, the well-connected 66-year-old financier accepted a plea deal resulting in his conviction for soliciting a minor.
