Authorities in New York say a large gathering in one Brooklyn neighborhood was dispersed by gunfire this weekend that left one victim dead and 11 others injured.
According to Fox News, a block party was in progress on Saturday evening when an individual armed with a gun began shooting into the crowd.
Reports indicate thousands of revelers — in addition to about 100 cops — were on the scene for what was described as an annual “Old Timers” celebration.
Officers from the New York Police Department responded to the disturbance a short time later and reportedly found a 38-year-old male victim dead from a gunshot wound to his head.
NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill added that of the 11 others injured in the violent crime, six had been treated at an area hospital and released. Available updates did not include conditions for the remaining five.
One witness said everyone was “just chilling and having a good time” when shots rang out.
“I ran as fast as I could away from everyone,” 19-year-old Kaseem Collins said. “I thought I was going to get shot.”
As of the most recent police statement, it was unclear whether more than one subject was involved in the shooting and no suspect had been publicly identified.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a statement lamenting the “terrible shooting,” promising city leaders will “do everything in our power to keep this community safe and get guns off our streets,” as reported by the New York Daily News.
