A female officer was shot and the male suspect was fatally shot, presumably by police, on Tuesday morning.
Citing law enforcement officials, the New York Post reports that the unidentified police officer was shot in the hand at 20 Prince Street in the Stapleton area of Staten Island at about 8:45 Tuesday morning. The gunman was shot, and later pronounced dead at the Staten Island University North Hospital.
Police told the newspaper that officers had been in the area canvassing for the suspect, accompanied by a victim. It is not yet clear what specific crime prompted the suspect search.
“There was a prior crime. They were doing a canvass with the victim and they spotted the perp. They had a description,” a police source told the New York Post.
The officer who was shot is expected to recover, and reportedly went to a hospital in a patrol car.
