A 16-year-old Detroit girl has been charged with stabbing to death her newborn infant earlier this year, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday.
The girl has been charged as a juvenile with second degree murder, and her name is not being released.
According to the Detroit News, emergency services were called to an apartment on Detroit’s east side for an “unknown medical condition” on February 21. They found the teen and transported her to a hospital.
The hospital determined that the girl had given birth earlier that day; police returned to the home the following day and found the baby’s body wrapped in a towel inside a purse that was hidden in a closet in the teen’s room.
Prosecutors allege the girl gave birth in a toilet and then stabbed the infant multiple times. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office said the baby died of multiple wounds to the neck, WWJ NewsRadio reported.
The prosecutor’s office initially announced they were charging the teen with first degree murder as an adult and provided her name. When the office retracted that statement and provided the new one, news outlets removed the girl’s name from their stories.
