A newborn baby was found buried alive in a suspected case of attempted infanticide.
Citing international news sources, the Independent and the New York Post report that the infant was discovered in or near the city of Bareilly in India. A father who was burying his stillborn daughter reportedly heard the baby’s cries, and found her in an earthen pot buried about 3 feet into the ground.
“At one point I thought that my daughter had come alive. But the voice was actually coming from inside the pot,” Hitesh Kumar reportedly told local media.
A police officer who did not want to be identified reportedly said that the baby, who weighed just over two pounds, appeared to be about five days old, and that a cemetery guard had seen a man and a woman believed to be the baby’s parents near the burial site.
The infant, who had been wrapped in a cloth, was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors reportedly believe she survived because her lungs were so small in size that she did not require a lot of oxygen.
Authorities continue to search for the girl’s parents.
“We are trying to find the parents of the baby and we suspect that this must have happened with their consent,” police chief Abhinandan Singh told reporters, according to the New York Post.
