A K-9 officer stabbed multiple times during a barricade situation in Las Vegas, Nevada, over the weekend is on the mend, Las Vegas Metro Police report, and the man accused of stabbing him is in jail.
Joseph Arquilla, 27, has been charged with one count of mistreatment of a police animal and six counts of resisting an officer with the use of a deadly weapon for the early Saturday morning incident, 8 News Now reported.
Hunter, a Belgian malinois who has been on the force for seven years, was rushed into surgery and is now recovering at home, LVMPD said.
In a post on Facebook, LVMPD said Arquilla’s knife broke when it hit Hunter’s collar during the attack, preventing his wounds from being more serious.
8 News Now reported that police officers responded to a call about a man climbing onto the roof of a building in south Las Vegas. The man, later identified as Arquilla, refused to come down, and police decided to treat the situation as a barricade. Officers, along with Hunter, were in the process of taking him into custody when he stabbed the dog.
Hunter is expected to make a full recovery.
