A 5-year-old boy is dead after he was shot inside a Los Angeles-area home.

KTLA reports that the unidentified boy was shot Wednesday afternoon in the Leimert Park area of south Los Angeles. He was reportedly transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

A spokesperson with the Los Angeles Police Department told the news outlet that the boy may have accidentally shot himself, but authorities are continuing to investigate other possibilities, including whether another person fired the gun. Police said there is no public threat at this time.

The boy had reportedly been placed in the home by the Department of Children and Family Services. Three other children and one adult were in the home at the time of the shooting.
