The family of an 18-year-old Dutch model who died mysteriously nearly two years ago has successfully argued for a murder probe.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Dutch model Ivana Smit, 18, was found dead in November 2017 after she purportedly fell from an apartment in a high-rise luxury building in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, landing naked on a lower balcony.
In the hours before her death, she had reportedly been partying with millionaire cryptocurrency trader Alexander Johnson, who is American, and his wife Luna.
From the early days of the death probe, Smit’s family has challenged the ruling by Malaysian authorities that Smit’s death was accidental. Reuters now reports that Malaysian authorities have announced they will re-open the investigation.
“The court ordered the attorney general to instruct the police to reinvestigate the cause of death, and for the case to be reclassified,” Bukit Aman Police Criminal Investigation Department chief Huzir Mohamed said this week, according to the report.
Luna had previously admitted that she and her husband had shared a threesome with Smit, who they had previously met.
“Ivana was our friend and we both had relationships with her,” Luna told the Daily Mail. “She came with us willingly that night.”
The couple has said they were asleep when Smit fell onto a sixth-floor balcony, and did not witness the plunge, the New York Post reports.
Citing local news outlets, Reuters reports that Smit had evidence of trauma and bruising on her body, along with traces of Johnson’s DNA under her fingernails.
Huzir reportedly said investigators would be interviewing possible witnesses, but did not say who they were.
