A 27-year-old Frenchman was hospitalized in critical but stable condition on Friday after a stranger slashed him across the face and neck as he walked with his girlfriend in upper Manhattan, police said, according to the New York Post.
The couple was walking along Adam Clayton Powell Jr Boulevard in Harlem at about 11 a.m., police said. A worker in a nearby building saw the incident on surveillance tape and told the Post the attacker had been walking alongside the couple then “looked [the victim] in the eye and pulled out — it looked like a box cutter — and sliced him on the neck,” the worker said.
Video obtained by the Post shows the man kneeling on the sidewalk with his girlfriend and police officers around him. He is holding a cloth against his neck and blood is streaming away from him down the sidewalk.
Emergency personnel took the victim to Harlem Hospital.
Police said they looked for the suspect — reportedly dressed in black and wearing Air Jordan sneakers — but did not find him.
The couple had been at the International House of Pancakes three blocks away just before the incident, police said.
