A couple was arrested in Nevada on Saturday, after the woman’s 11-year-old son was reportedly found dead in the trunk of a car in Texas.
Corey Trumbull, 31, was charged with capital murder, and both he and Stormy Johnson, 37, are facing tampering with evidence charges for the death of Johnson’s son, Logan Cline. One day after Trumbull was arrested for a domestic incident, police found Cline’s body inside a vehicle parked at a Red Roof Inn in Texas, according to the Wichita Falls Times Record News.
On February 26, a day before Cline’s body was found, police were called to a Las Vegas shopping center by reports that Johnson was possibly battered and was seeking medical help. The news outlet reported that Johnson had run into a business and claimed she was hiding from Trumbull who was asleep in a car parked across the street with her 15-year-old daughter.
Trumbull reportedly claimed that Johnson went into a Walgreens to get something to drink and had not returned after he fell asleep in the truck. He reportedly denied assaulting Johnson in the past even though he mentioned her having facial injuries before she fled, according to the Times Record News.
However, Johnson reportedly told officers that Trumbull had hit her in the thigh with a pipe and punched her multiple times before ordering her to stay in the truck. She said she fled the vehicle when he fell asleep to get help.
KLAS reported that after the February 26 emergency call, Johnson was hospitalized for various injuries, including a broken right shoulder, broken left elbow, broken nose, broken right ankle, and bruised eyes.
The Times Record News reported that Johnson told authorities that on February 24, she fled the pickup truck and ran to a 7-Eleven. A 7-Eleven worker called police to report Johnson for trespassing, and a responding officer did not see any injuries on her.
Trumbull was said to have started beating Johnson after the February 24 incident. He allegedly wrapped a dog leash — a metal chain — around her neck and a car seat headrest and demanded she drive for 10 minutes while he yanked on the leash to the point that Johnson nearly lost consciousness. Once at the Walgreens, he allegedly punched her all over her body, according to the report.
Information uncovered during the domestic violence investigation in Nevada led to the discovery of Cline’s body in Texas. It is not yet known how or when the boy died, and authorities have not commented on a motive.
Reports indicated that Trumbull and Johnson had been dating for seven months and arrived in Las Vegas on January 5. Records from Clark County stated that Trumbull is facing multiple charges in connection with the February 26 emergency call, including first-degree kidnapping, domestic battery by strangulation, battery with substantial bodily harm, and coercion with force.
A GoFundMe for Cline, which has since been deactivated, disclosed that the slain boy’s father is in the Army and is in Afghanistan.
