A Charleston County mother shot her 4-year-old son to death on Monday and then killed herself, authorities in the South Carolina county said on Wednesday, the Charleston Post and Courier reported.
The Charleston County Coroner’s Office ruled that the death of Gretchen Francey, 40, was a suicide, and that of her son Liam, 4, was a homicide. The coroner’s office said both died on Monday, and their bodies were found on Tuesday.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, deputies responded to the home at about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday and found the Franceys unresponsive.
The Post and Courier also said that a firearm was found near the victims.
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday they were not seeking any suspects but waited until the coroner made a ruling to identify the victims to provide any details.
The sheriff’s office also said that the residence was locked when first responders arrived, and they forced their way in. They said they received a report of an unresponsive mother and child inside but did not say how they received that report came.
