South Carolina police are looking for a man who blocked a jogger Wednesday afternoon with his vehicle, got out, and opened fire on the 72-year-old woman, the Beaufort Police Department said.
The woman, who has not been identified, was struck by at least one of “an undisclosed number of shots at her with a handgun.” She was taken to a local hospital for stabilization and then airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
On Saturday, the department released a sketch of the suspect, saying he was between 5 foot 8 and 5 fo0t 10 inches tall, a slight build, and between 25 and 30 years of age.
Police also released surveillance photos of a silver Nissan Versa hatchback that they called a “vehicle of interest,” the Beaufort Gazette reported.
“The vehicle has apparent minor damage in the form of separation of the area between the front right quarter panel and the front bumper,” police said. “There appears to be slight denting of the right rear quarter panel, also.”
There was no update on the woman’s condition.
The incident took place on a residential street near Beaufort’s Basil Green sports park in the Pigeon Point neighborhood north of downtown. Beaufort lies between Charleston and Savannah, Georgia, on Port Royal Island, one of South Carolina’s numerous coastal sea islands. It is the home of Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort (Merritt Field).
Beaufort police asked anyone with information to contact Investigator Josh Dowling at 843-322-7950, the Anonymous Tip Line at 843-322-7938 or Beaufort County Dispatch at 843-524-2777.
