A Dallas woman shot and killed her 9-year-old daughter and then herself on Monday after chasing her husband out of the house during an argument, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Authorities identified the woman on Wednesday as 34-year-old Alexica Stevenson-Gates. Initially, she was inside the home with both her daughter and her 12-year-old son, but the boy was freed at about 3 a.m.
Police arrived at about 12:30 a.m. when Stevenson-Gates’s husband called 911 and said he and his wife had gotten into an argument and that he fled the house when she began shooting at him.
SWAT officers arrived at about 2 a.m. and began negotiations. After several failed attempts to persuade her to surrender, SWAT officers entered the home. The woman was barricaded in a closet with her daughter and opened fire on them, they said, striking two officers.
The SWAT team retreated without firing. Abut 2 1/2 hours later, they entered the home again, and this time found Stevenson-Gates and her daughter dead in the closet.
WFAA reported that the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services had no prior investigations regarding Stevenson-Gates and the children, but she had previously been arrested on family domestic violence charges. DFPS told the station the boy was being placed with a family member.
