The Rock County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin confirmed that searchers on Monday found the body of Madison Billups, a young girl who disappeared on Thursday.
The Janesville Gazette reports that Madison’s body was found around 11 a.m. Monday morning at the Rock River area, between the Bellrichard Bridge and South River Road in Janesville. Madison disappeared while playing with her brother last week near Anglers Park.
A bystander saw both Madison and her brother fall into the water. The bystander jumped in and grabbed the brother, saving him, but Madison got swept under and disappeared.
“She made everyone her best friend. If you met her, you’re her best friend, and you’re going to play for six hours,” Madison’s cousin, Brenda Ward, said, according to CBS 23.
The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Department is scheduled to conduct an autopsy over the next few days, according to Sheriff Troy Knudson with the Rock County Sheriff’s Department.
Knudson said that the incident appears to be a “tragic accident.”
