A 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the head Saturday morning in northwest Atlanta and remained in critical condition on Sunday, WSB reports.
The incident took place at around 10 a.m., Atlanta police said. Atlanta police announced on Sunday they had arrested Dontavious Wells, 31, multiple counts related to the shooting.
“It appears the child was left unattended inside the home under the care of Mr. Wells when he got a hold of the firearm and accidentally discharged the weapon,” Atlanta Police spokesman Anthony Grant told 11Alive.
Police said Wells has been charged with reckless conduct, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, cruelty to children in the second degree, and a previous outstanding battery charge (domestic violence).
Detectives also said they found a handgun in the home that had been reported stolen on July 7 and charged Wells with theft by receiving a stolen firearm.
It’s not clear what Wells’s relationship is to the injured toddler.
