A Texas man is behind bars facing torture charges after allegedly shooting a cat with a high-powered crossbow.
CBS DFW reports that the incident happened in the 3200 block of W. Division Street in Arlington, where a neighbor found a severely injured cat with an arrow through his neck and torso. Animal Services transported the cat to an animal medical center for emergency surgery.
Animal Cruelty Investigator Brandi Alcantar followed up with the incident and interviewed residents in the area, who said Tommy Wayne Hasting shot the cat. One neighbor said that Hasting “laughed and thought it was funny,” according to an arrest affidavit.
“This disturbing case of torturing an animal will not be tolerated,” Interim Police Chief Kevin Kolbye said. “We will put as many resources as needed into animal cruelty investigations to bring justice in these types of cases.”
Hasting was arrested on Thursday and charged with a felony offense of “Cruelty To Non-Livestock Animals: Torture.”
Meanwhile, the cat survived, NBC DFW reports. Officials named the cat “Robin” and made him the “Animal Services shelter cat.” Robin’s story will be shared with cruelty education programs.
“Robin has become a member of our shelter family and we are excited about having him,” Ray Rentschler with Animal Services said.
