A 6-year-old Texas girl died after her stepmother allegedly beat her with a belt and forced her to sleep on the floor.
According to KBTX, police responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive child at a residence in Bryan on Tuesday night around 9 p.m. There, responding officers found the girl unresponsive with bruising and puncture wounds on her body.
It is unclear from the report if the girl was pronounced dead at the scene or a hospital.
The victim’s stepmother reportedly confessed to police that she had beat the girl with a belt and ordered her to sleep on the floor earlier Tuesday. The stepmother, 40-year-old Jessica Bundren, said the girl was breathing when she had checked on her earlier.
Authorities have not yet commented on what prompted the stepmother to beat and punish the child. According to the report, investigators found a belt that had metal rivets — nail-like mechanical fasteners — that appeared to correspond with the puncture wounds on the girl’s torso.
Bundren has been arrested and charged with injury to the child. It is unclear from the report if or where she is in custody, and whether additional charges are expected.
