An off-duty police officer held a 25-year-old suspect at gunpoint Friday morning after the man allegedly attacked his parents — his mother fatally, Fox 2 reports.
Huron Township Public Safety Director Everette Robbins said that the son apparently arrived at the home and got into an argument with his 55-year-old dad.
“That led to multiple weapons being brought out,” Robbins said. “At some point, we do know there were shots fired. There were multiple weapons on the scene — at least one knife and one handgun brought out.”
Robbins said that most of the fight took place inside the home, where the man’s 53-year-old mother was found dead. But it spilled outside, across the street, and into a neighbor’s front yard.
“That’s when we got the call from the neighbor — the suspect was attempting to stab somebody on his front lawn,” Robbins said.
That neighbor was an off-duty police officer who held the suspect at gunpoint until on-duty officers arrived.
“He’s a guy with great integrity,” Robbins said of the neighbor. “He is well-known here. He was able to handle it professionally and quickly. … We are very fortunate no one else got hurt.”
The mother was pronounced dead on the scene, and the father was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is expected to survive.
Investigators have not released the names of the victims or the suspect, or what type of injuries they sustained. The suspect was taken into custody, but it’s not clear what charges he faces.
